Gutiérrez asks about pre-K to kindergarten dual-language continuity
Gutiérrez asks whether dual-language pre-K seats correspond to kindergarten seats. Liss and Garcia say the city seeks continuity but does not explicitly reserve every pre-K seat for kindergarten.
And do you all have a sense of there is, is there an exact amount of kindergarten through five seats or maybe kindergarten seats for that dual language, for the amount of like dual language in the pre-K?
For example, if there's 22 slots in dual language pre-K, is it expected that there will be 22 slots in kindergarten or potentially more, but not less?
I'll just say as a value, I know the Deputy Chancellor mentioned this when planning, we do look for opportunities to create continuity so that children can have an experience in K-12 education that builds on their early childhood.
But I'll turn it to Dr.
Garcia for that.
Thank you for asking that.
That's something that's really important to us.
44%
of all students in K-12 report a home language other than English.
And so we do believe that when kids are just like you experienced, exposed to dual language, multilingual education in the early years, being able to establish that foundation and continuing kindergarten is fundamental.
So we work really closely with the Division of Early Childhood Education on
and the community on ensuring that we have a pattern to be able to grow the seats for students who are in pre-K in dual language programs and have them be able to continue in kindergarten.
