Gutiérrez asks if K-5 dual-language schools offer pre-K dual language
Gutiérrez asks whether every K-5 dual-language program also offers a pre-K dual-language program. Liss says not every school does and describes exposure models that are not formal dual language.
Can you, does every existing elementary K through five dual language program, do they also, if they have a pre-K, I mean, they should have a pre-K, do they also offer dual language, pre-K dual language?
Not every single one.
Okay.
I will say, not to, again, generalize from my own experience, but my children go to an elementary school that has dual language Spanish beginning in kindergarten, though there is no formal dual language in the 3K and pre-K, different school than I was at last year.
The school is emphasizing language exposure in the early childhood years, so there are ways in which children can be exposed in early childhood, even if it is not a formal dual language program.
Is there a plan to, if they have these dual language programs existing, is there a plan?
And if we can't get there, what are some of those challenges?
But is there a plan to extend, yes, into 3K and even into 3K?
Yeah, we have.
We can get you the data on exactly how many of the existing kindergarten dual language have pre-K dual language.
And then the next piece that we have been collaborating really closely with, with Division of Early Childhood Education, is on examining the places that have kindergarten dual language and do not.
And have pre-K, but it's not dual language, if there's a community interest and how we can increase continuity in that way.
So it's something that we're actively looking at that data and using that to inform where new programs may be needed.
