Gutiérrez asks whether home language limits program access
Gutiérrez asks whether families whose primary language is not English face limits in applying to 3K, pre-K, or 2K programs. Erica Phillips says demand is strong and over 80% of families received one of their top choices.
Do you all, have you all found that if a family wants a seat in 3K or pre-K or now or 2K
and they want a seat in a particular program and it's from a family whose primary language is a language other than English, have you found that that raises any limitations for what schools they attend or even apply to?
Or is that a question that you pose to families?
That's a great question.
So we are very actively looking at what families need, both based on the language of the family and really demand around all of the programs.
And that's something that we've been monitoring quite a bit.
There is really strong demand for the dual language program from families who speak a language other than English and also for families who want to expose their child to another language.
And, you know, so yes, we do have, you know, a lot of interest in that and making sure that we are prioritizing.
So our goal for classes are for them to be 50-50 native, the language of that program.
Families who speak another language.
And so we are able to meet families'needs.
I think over 80% of families were able to get one of their top schools, including, you know, dual language, if that was one of the ones that they prioritized.
There are options and ways that we need to continue to monitor what the demand is.
But we are able to prioritize families who need that dual language program.
And is the strong demand that you mentioned, is that particularly for pre-K or is it a mix of like?
Families are in 3K.
What year?
The strong demand that I was talking about was for our dual language program specifically.
It could be K-12.
It could be K-12, but specifically thinking about pre-K.
And we just, for the first time, opened up two 3K dual language programs this year.
Oh, great.
Where are those programs?
We will have to get back to you on that.
All right.
I will pass it to Councilmember Riley.
