DeFalco describes design standards and comprehensive coastal vision
DeFalco says BCR is developing first coastal infrastructure design standards and an asset management system. It is also working toward a comprehensive vision for all 520 miles of coastline considering risk, equity, land use, and maintenance.
At the same time, we have to look beyond the problem.
projects already underway.
BCR is developing the city's first coastal infrastructure design standards and an asset management system for coastal resilience infrastructure.
The Bureau is also working toward a comprehensive vision for all 520 miles of New York City's coastline, one that considers risk, equity, land use, community needs, and the realities of maintaining this infrastructure over generations.
We need a plan where no one's left behind.
But infrastructure, but realistically, that's a huge challenge.
The plan needs to be responsive to the priorities of New Yorkers, taking affordability, housing, and safety into account, and we know that won't be easy.
Coastal resilience is too big and too complex for any one sector to solve alone.
It's a shared challenge requiring a shared solution.
Fully protecting New York City's coastline will require investments measured in tens of billions of dollars, and we could be looking at anywhere from approximately $1 to $2 billion annually over the next 20 to 30 years.
