Brooks-Powers asks how to update the Rockaway evacuation route
Brooks-Powers says the previous administration committed to updating the Rockaway Peninsula evacuation route, but roads have changed, some have been demapped, development has altered the footprint, signs are missing, and new residents do not know where to go. She asks NYCEM and the Chair what steps are needed to begin updating the route.
And my last, last, last question.
Evacuation route.
The last administration, I have a letter committed to updating the evacuation route for the Rockaway Peninsula.
Obviously, the roads have changed.
Some roads have been demapped now.
The footprint looks different because of all of the development.
We have a lot of new people on the peninsula also that don't know what even the current evacuation route is.
The signs are down, so they're not up on the poles anymore in many instances, and no one knows where to go in those moments.
And so...
I like to begin.
to explore with the chair and NISM, what are the steps that are actually needed to update the evacuation route so that we can start that process?
I know the community board has followed up on this as well, but we did get a letter committed to that based on some of the ULARP actions that we took.
But again, the reality is some of these roads that once were probably a part of this evacuation route don't exist anymore.
Like next door, they just renamed Edgemere Avenue because it's now located somewhere different now.
So we want to make sure everything is up to date.
But again, thank you, Chair, and thank you all for helping with this conversation.
I know we have some follow-ups.
Of course.
