Hankerson reads Brooks-Powers statement supporting Intro 927

New York City Council · Sep 30, 2026 · starts 0:04:48 · 1 min 37 sec

Hankerson reads a statement from Councilmember Brooks-Powers explaining that USPS, Google Maps, and emergency responders do not consistently recognize Shorefront Parkway. Restoring Edgemere Avenue would improve addressing and support the future Arverne East development. Hankerson then prepares to swear in the administration.

Ty Hankerson

I do have a statement from Councilmember Brooks Powers regarding her bill.

Ty Hankerson

I'm going to read it verbatim.

Ty Hankerson

Thank you, Chair Hankerson and members of the Committee on Parks and Recreation for hearing Intro 927 today.

Ty Hankerson

Intro 927 is a simple bill renaming Shorefront Parkway to Edgemere Avenue between Beach 32nd and Beach 56th Place in Far Rockaway, Queens.

Ty Hankerson

We are requesting that Shorefront Parkway be renamed back to Edgemere Avenue, the name it held until a 2024 renaming, because the current street name is not consistently recognized by USPS, Google Maps, and other address systems.

Ty Hankerson

This address discrepancy results in failed deliveries of mail and packages, challenges,

Ty Hankerson

for emergency responders and city service providers to locate properties quickly and accurately, and disruptions to essential services that rely on validated

Ty Hankerson

addresses, including utility and insurance providers.

Ty Hankerson

Restoring the street name to Edgemere Avenue would align the address with commonly recognized mailing and mapping databases, improve public safety, and eliminate operational issues for future residents and businesses.

Ty Hankerson

Notably, this stretch of street

Ty Hankerson

runs along the future site of Arvern East, a multifaceted development that will transform 116 acres of vacant land into 1,650 new housing units, including 80% affordable housing.

Ty Hankerson

We like to hear that.

Ty Hankerson

As well as co-op homeownership opportunities.

Ty Hankerson

This change will address future challenges for the developers, future residents, and businesses at Auburn East.

Ty Hankerson

Thank you.

Ty Hankerson

Sophia Brooks-Powers.

Ty Hankerson

All right.
