Chris Sanders of TA Manhattan testifies on e-bike safety and infrastructure
Chris Sanders supports Intros 244, 950, 985, 988, and 1004, and calls for a protected bike lane network and safe, low-speed e-bikes as the norm.
All right, thank you Speaker Menon, thank you Council Member Abreu.
I'm Chris Sanders, I live in Midtown Manhattan, City Council District 4.
I'm here because I'm the recently elected co-chair of the unpaid volunteer-led TA Manhattan Activist Committee.
I want to support e-bike safety and pedestrian safety with intros 244, 950, 985, 988, and 1004.
The globally accepted standard speed for e-bikes is 20 miles per hour.
I support the City Council legislation that officially adopts this standard right here in New York City.
I support pedestrian safety with improved look-up and other wayfinding signage.
Protecting pedestrians, getting dangerously fast e-bikes and other devices off the streets, and compelling DOT to complete an organized network of safe and protected bike lanes in every borough and every neighborhood
for the safety and benefit of pedestrians and bikes must be the outcome of this meeting.
Ridiculous and unworkable licensing schemes are a huge distraction that doesn't improve safety for people.
We need the legislation to streamline the process for building
out the cost-effective, safe, and protected bike lane network, add new signage that increases pedestrian safety, and ensure safe, low-speed e-bikes all become New York normal.
Thank you for letting me speak up for street safety.
Speaker Menon.
Chairman Abreu, and shout out to Council Members Virginia Maloney, Harvey Epstein, Carl Wilson, and Chris Marte.
I appreciate your testimony and congrats on your new gig.
