Council Member Won introduces Intro 1066 on traffic calming in bike lanes
Won says the council and mayor have responded with a package of 23 bills, and introduces her bill Intro 1066, requiring DOT to install traffic calming measures in at least 50 bike lanes.
So the city council and the mayor have responded with urgency, seasoned assist orders against retailers selling illegal high-speed devices, and a package of 23 bills that we're hearing today to address
registration and delivery platform accountability, because we are sick and tired of people having to be forced to drive at such high speeds to just make a living.
These efforts are in response to real problems of high-speed oversized devices that account for most of your crashes.
But again, I want to emphasize that the largest leading cause of death is caused by vehicles, by cars and SUVs, not by cyclists.
And these...
Please, please keep it down in the chambers.
If you are making sound, you will be escorted out of these chambers.
Consider this your first warning.
And again, after all these deaths, that is why my bill, Intro 1066, will require the Department of Transportation to install traffic calming measures in at least 50 bike lanes.
And we have been advocating for years, and we've had the mayor's commitment for installation of daylighting to make it safer for all of us.
So I look forward to this conversation, and we look forward to starting with a defined set of bike lane intersections.
And this bill allows DOT to generate real-world data on where and what works.
So New Yorkers should not have to choose between their physical safety.
And an affordable, sustainable...
Way to travel.
Thank you so much.
Thank you, Councilmember.
