Speaker Menin asks about collision data and hospital reporting
Menin asks about data on collisions between pedestrians and e-bikes, and whether NYPD contacts hospitals for missing data, and DOT says they are working on better data integration.
And what data does NYPD and DOT have on collisions between pedestrians and e-bikes, e-scooters, and mopeds?
Is there any additional data you feel will be important to have that the city currently doesn't have access to?
And then lastly, is NYPD regularly contacting EMS and hospitals to see whether there is data that they're missing on accidents and fatalities?
To the second point, no, we're not.
You do not?
We do not, no.
Is there a reason why you don't do that?
For the most part, when we have collisions or injuries that should be brought to the police's attention, we get called by the hospital.
So someone will reach out for the most part.
So I don't know that there are any misses.
I can add here, Madeline Labde, Chief of Staff at DOT.
I think the broader coalition work of all of our sister agencies on the Vision Zero Task Force, we have health and hospitals as well as the Department of Health and working with research institutions and level one trauma centers to engage them both in an
educational way as well as in a data way.
So there are longer term plans that have been mentioned in the Vision Zero Reimagined Report the administration released earlier this month
that talk further about our goals for better integration of all the pieces of data from a collision to the streetscape to the hospital data in a more holistic manner.
So there are lots of goals for linking all this data more fulsomely at each point and rationalizing it as well as ensuring that we are not having misses that are in ERs or other places around the city.
So for health and hospitals, you are collecting that data, but if it's not a health and hospital hospital, you're not?
Because I just want to make sure I understand.
Yeah, I would have to go back and talk to our colleagues at the Department of Health who lead this coordination work with H&H.
Okay, if you could please get back to the...
the committees, but I really would urge you to be working with all hospitals because we're hearing from a lot of EMS doctors about this issue, which is something concerning.
So I think there really needs to be a real plan here to be working with our hospital system on this so that we're actually getting fulsome data on this.
