Speaker Menin outlines multi-pronged approach and licensing
Menin describes a multi-pronged effort including consumer education, business accountability, and licensing third-party apps, and notes the record 23 bills being heard.
Addressing this safety crisis is a multi-pronged effort.
It requires informing consumers of the risks of the devices they are purchasing, holding businesses accountable
for the safety of the products they advertise and sell, and ensuring that the delivery companies share responsibility for the safety of the workers who power their operations.
And let me just say another word on that.
Licensing, and I say this as a former commissioner of the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, licensing is one of the most powerful regulatory tools we have, and we as a council intend to use it.
We have bills in this package that will force the third-party apps to be licensed and put the onus on them in terms of safety, and that I think is really important.
We are also in this hearing hearing a record 23 bills.
That's never been done by the City Council.
This is a City Council record of 23 bills, and I really want to thank the chairs and my colleagues for all of the bills that they have put forward.
Today's hearing truly reflects the Council's commitment to addressing these challenges through a comprehensive approach.
that brings together infrastructure enhancements, robust protections for consumers, for workers, for pedestrians, and public safety principles
without needing to pit pedestrians, cyclists, delivery workers, and other road users against each other.
So today we look forward to hearing from the administration, from advocates, from industry representatives, from delivery workers, from members of the public,
as we work to make the city safer for everyone.
