Alina Victor says cultural specificity is more than language access
Victor says culturally specific services are often reduced to language access, but immigrant survivors face broader barriers including immigration-related stress and family dynamics that need closer attention.
I would like to add, and I'm going to maybe be,
like repetitive in this, but I think a lot of the times when we're thinking about gender-based violence, we leave culturally specific and silo it into language access.
And that is not the only aspect of services that are needed for immigrant communities.
We're living in a time where immigration services are extremely difficult for a lot of our survivors and accessing that support, though I know there's limitations because the federal government is involved.
It creates other violence opportunities and concerns and contributors within our family dynamics.
And those are things that we also have to look at a little bit more closely.
