Q&A

Gutiérrez asks about public housing partnerships and resources

New York City Council · Sep 30, 2026 · starts 0:44:49 · 1 min 55 sec

Gutiérrez cites high domestic violence rates in her district and asks how NGBV will partner with OCS divisions on public housing. Delany-Brumsey says NGBV staff joined Deputy Mayor-led public housing safety meetings with the Office of Neighborhood Safety and that joint work is being strengthened.

Jennifer Gutiérrez

sure we're ahead of it because I think it's it's difficult to kind of like restructure this um and then my last question that I am just curious um pre-pandemic um

Jennifer Gutiérrez

a night to develop it in my district books where houses had some of the higher rates of domestic violence incidents um and so

Jennifer Gutiérrez

I'm familiar with some of the folks on the ground under the various divisions of Office of Community Safety.

Jennifer Gutiérrez

Is there anything specific that your office is being asked to do in partnership with some of these divisions in public housing specifically?

Jennifer Gutiérrez

Like, is this merger going to allow us to...

Jennifer Gutiérrez

Have more resources just to do more and specifically in public housing?

Ayesha Delany-Brumsey

Yeah, that's a great question.

Ayesha Delany-Brumsey

The deputy mayor actually recently ran a set of meetings to address some key safety issues in locations across the city, public housing locations, other locations.

Ayesha Delany-Brumsey

And one of the things that we noticed early on is that we needed to have someone within those meetings who had domestic and gender-based violence expertise.

Ayesha Delany-Brumsey

So we included one of the staff members from NGBV in those meetings, in addition to staff members from the Office of Neighborhood Safety, who do a lot of our work in NITRA developments.

Ayesha Delany-Brumsey

And so that's just one example of how we're trying to get these teams to work even more closely together so that we can say, for our team that's supporting NITRA developments around reducing violence, we know that so often some of that violence has a root in domestic

Ayesha Delany-Brumsey

and gender-based violence.

Ayesha Delany-Brumsey

And so how do we ensure that we are both bringing resources as well as expertise?

Ayesha Delany-Brumsey

And one of the things that I noticed when I first came on as commissioner is some of that work was already happening.

Ayesha Delany-Brumsey

These offices, while separate, were doing some work together.

Ayesha Delany-Brumsey

They have some joint providers.

Ayesha Delany-Brumsey

And so we're really just building on that foundation and trying to make it stronger and stronger.
