Iman Ghad calls for restorative justice in schools
Ghad says school disciplinary measures mirror the carceral system and traumatized youth are often pushed out. She argues restorative justice in schools is part of ending gender-based violence.
And in that same vein, I'd like to also relate how this pertains again to young people and the education that they receive in schools because the disciplinary measures that they have to deal with within schools do reflect the carceral system and it all starts there.
So when sometimes teachers experience a young person who they write off as troubled, usually,
He's traumatized.
Maybe it's experiencing gender-based violence among a plethora of other issues.
Again, mental health is a huge part of it.
And what happens is they are usually pushed out of school, suspended, taken out of class, ultimately just taken out of the safety of school, which should be a place where they can learn to understand themselves, the experiences that they are going through, and know how to navigate them.
So restorative justice within schools is a huge part also of ending gender-based violence.
