Menin on AI dangers and federal regulatory vacuum
Menin cites recent reports of rogue AI cyber attacks and dire warnings from AI company leaders. She criticizes federal inaction, describing an executive order about naming the technology and a self-regulation pact, and says the Council hopes to spur action at other levels of government.
In the past few weeks, we've heard extremely concerning reports regarding artificial intelligence, reports that have appeared with increasing frequency and that highlight the potentially catastrophic danger.
of this technology.
New Yorkers'concerns stem from the disturbing cyber attacks committed by rogue AI agents, but also from extremely dire statements made by leaders of the very companies who are developing this technology.
The dialogue and the legislative process we are initiating today is particularly important given the lack of any regulation by the federal government,
whose actions thus far have been limited to an executive order about what we should call this technology and a pact with leading AI firms focusing on self-regulation.
Our hope, and indeed our belief, is that today's hearing will not only allow us to develop effective AI regulations here in our city,
but that it will spur meaningful conversation and action in other jurisdictions, especially on the federal level.
