Chair Louis raises labor concerns on Sojourner Truth–Mapes rezoning
Chair Louis makes a closing statement on the Sojourner Truth–Mapes rezoning, says the developer did not adequately engage the union, and urges FEPS houses to commit to 32BJ for a fair contract covering existing and new properties.
Before we conclude today, I just want to make a quick comment on the record regarding the Sojourner Truth MAPES rezoning that we voted on today.
Excuse me.
I do want to uplift my colleagues wishes to support member deference and achieving the project at the requirements appropriate for his district.
However, it is clear that the developer has not adequately adequately.
engaged with the union in developing this proposal.
And as a committee, we are left uncertain on what labor guarantees can be expected as a result of the new development being considered today.
The current commitment as presented was insufficient to ensure that workers will be prioritized in the new development with the new needs that the building will bring.
As a council, our priority must be in supporting both our residents and the workers who are on the front lines every day, keeping our housing safe, maintained, and secured.
I strongly encourage FEPS houses to make a clear commitment to 32BJ to uphold a fair contract as
negotiations begin next year and to ensure that the needs of these workers are reflected in an expanded agreement covering both their existing properties and the new properties created through this rezoning.
Thank you so much.
