Q&A

Brewer asks how DCWP handles electric pedicabs

New York City Council · Oct 7, 2026 · starts 0:48:03 · 43 sec

Brewer says pedicabs are supposed to be non-electric but almost all appear electric. Ortiz confirms motorized pedicabs are illegal and can be summonsed or confiscated, and Brewer says she personally thinks electric assist makes sense.

Gale A. Brewer

The other question I have is the...

Gale A. Brewer

Electric bike versus regular bike.

Gale A. Brewer

Now, my understanding is pedicabs are supposed to be regular bike and not electric.

Gale A. Brewer

They are mostly, I think, almost 100% electric.

Gale A. Brewer

How do you handle that?

Gale A. Brewer

I personally feel they should be electric because it's hard to pedal and you want to get people where you're going.

Gale A. Brewer

So how do you handle that issue?

Carlos Ortiz

So you're correct that pedicabs are...

Carlos Ortiz

are not allowed to be motorized right now.

Carlos Ortiz

And it is grounds for the police to issue a summons or to confiscate a vehicle.

Carlos Ortiz

Let me, and I want to get back to another question you asked earlier, Council Member.

Carlos Ortiz

So let me throw to my colleague to describe the revocations we've done.
