Brewer says pedicab industry is not working and needs a restart
Council Member Gale Brewer shares that she takes pedicabs at Central Park West and says drivers know not to overcharge her. She argues the city's approach has been inconsistent and ineffective and that the industry needs to start over.
Thank you very much, Chair Epstein.
I am the only council member who takes pedicabs, and I take them at 72nd Street and Central Park West because I'm always late to get to the whatever speaking event is in the park.
But when I get there, they say, oh, it's Gail.
Don't overcharge her.
So I do like that group of people, and I thank you for all the work that you do, but we do need regulation.
So thank you, Chair Epstein, for including the bills on today's agenda.
I think we heard that for too long the city's approach to the pedicab industry has been inconsistent and ineffective, creating problems for public safety, consumers, and drivers while burdening enforcement.
We've got to start over.
Because nothing in this industry right now is working.
And New Yorkers and visitors and drivers all deserve better.
