Council Member Vernikov Advocates for Intro 489A on Towing Database
Vernikov explains Intro 489A, which creates a centralized online database for towed vehicles and an opt-in notification system, thanking colleagues and agencies for their work.
Thank you, Acting Majority Leader.
I am beyond thrilled to see Introduction 489A, which will create a modern, streamlined, and centralized towing database passing today.
Intro 489A will create a centralized online database allowing New Yorkers to search for information on any vehicle that has been moved or towed from public or private property by a city entity or licensed private tow operator.
This will replace an outdated and non-functional system that has frustrated many vehicle owners.
Most towers do not share towed vehicle information with each other and there is no single database where the information is kept, so owners are currently in a scramble to locate their towed or moved vehicle.
Once this portal is created, the public will be able to utilize one centralized portal that will greatly limit frustration, save them time, hassle, and perhaps some money.
The database will also have a function to allow vehicle owners to opt into notifications that alert them if their vehicle information is entered into the towing database.
I'd like to thank the following people who have helped to see this bill through, Speaker Menon, Chair Feliz, and members of the Public Safety Committee, as well as a big thank you to my colleagues for their support here today.
I'd also like to thank members of the NYPD, DCWP, and the Department of Finance, and the many different...
agencies involved that helped to work out the details of this legislation, as well as senior legislative attorney for New York City Council, Josh Kingsley, who's really great, executive director of the minority delegation, Peter Spencer,
my legislative director, Troy Olson, and finally, I'd like to thank members of the public, as well as the towing industry who came to me with their input that helped inform and shape the version we're voting on here today.
Thank you and congratulations to all my colleagues who are passing bills today.
Thank you, Councilmember.
Next up, Councilmember Ressler.
