Commissioner Anderson introduces DSNY equity mission
Commissioner Gregory Anderson introduces himself and Deputy Commissioner Jen McDonald. He says DSNY provides free, unlimited sanitation service to all New Yorkers and acknowledges that the waste system reflects longstanding injustices.
Good afternoon, Chair Sanchez and members of the City Council Committee on Sanitation and Solid Waste Management.
I'm Gregory Anderson, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Sanitation, and I am joined by Jen McDonald, our Deputy Commissioner for Solid Waste Management.
The Department of Sanitation has equity baked into our functions at the deepest structural level, in that we provide
a free, unlimited service to all New Yorkers.
There's no sign up, there's no opt in, there's no fee for collection or limit on how much you can set out.
Just put your waste at the curb, properly sorted, and in a container, and we'll come get it.
And sanitation serves everyone without question and is committed to fairness.
