Chair Williams asks which CreateNYC commitments remain unfulfilled
Vij says living wages for cultural workers and artists remain unfulfilled, arts education needs more work with DOE, and DCLA alone cannot change conditions without an all-of-government approach.
Which major commitments remain unfulfilled?
I think the ones that we were just talking about in terms of living wages for cultural workers and artists.
I think there was, I do think that the piece of the plan, that was the lightest piece of the plan.
Workers and artists are still struggling against this affordability crisis today.
That's something we absolutely have to address.
I think we have a lot of work to do with our colleagues in the DOE to continue to move arts education forward and to think about maybe new or deeper ways that the cultural field can collaborate with schools, although they do a lot already.
And in general, just the kind of all of government approach.
I think what we learned from the plan.
It's like DCLA alone, right?
The policies that come out of our office are not going to wholesale change the conditions for workers in New York City that will positively impact.
Cultural workers and artists, that that's an all of government approach.
So I think also in these areas where we're looking into that kind of inner city coordination, there's a lot more there to think about how culture is at the table across city government.
It's not just DCLA holding it, but all of us together holding that work and that cultural inclusion is part of other agencies'priorities.
