Council Member Stevens presses DCLA on tracking CUNY Cultural Corps outcomes

New York City Council · Oct 19, 2026 · starts 0:55:35 · 2 min 19 sec

Stevens asks how many of the 1,100 CUNY Cultural Corps participants reached leadership; Vij says DCLA does not have that data, and Stevens insists the program should be tracked beyond anecdotes.

Althea V. Stevens

And you said CUNY Corps, is that what you just said?

Diya Vij

CUNY Cultural Corps, a paid internship program.

Althea V. Stevens

Can you talk a little bit about that?

Althea V. Stevens

Because I know I was talking to the deputy speaker.

Althea V. Stevens

We've heard this mentioned, but we don't have a lot of information about what this program is and what it entails.

Althea V. Stevens

And could you talk a little bit about this program?

Diya Vij

Yeah, it was started, I believe, in 2017.

Diya Vij

It is a partnership with CUNY where CUNY places undergraduate students in paid...

Diya Vij

Internships at cultural organizations across the city, either one year or one semester.

Diya Vij

And to date, there's been 1,100 CUNY cultural course students.

Diya Vij

And they really are.

Diya Vij

I mean, I've worked at a number of organizations.

Althea V. Stevens

1,100.

Althea V. Stevens

So how many?

Althea V. Stevens

Have you seen go to the executive track or leadership track?

Althea V. Stevens

How many from that 1,100?

Diya Vij

I don't have that data.

Althea V. Stevens

So you guys not tracking that?

Diya Vij

No.

Althea V. Stevens

So we have a program that you just cited as being a place that can bring diversity, but you're not tracking how that diversity is being dispersed amongst the 1,100 young people that have went through the program?

Diya Vij

Well, yes.

Diya Vij

I mean, each institution is tracking their own hiring process.

Diya Vij

But how do you do that if this is a program you just talked about?

Althea V. Stevens

Maybe that's something we should do, right?

Diya Vij

Yeah, we can look into it for sure.

Diya Vij

And I know anecdotally that a lot of them have been hired and, you know, are finishing university and then go into a career in the arts or have a different relationship.

Althea V. Stevens

But shouldn't we be at a place where it's not anecdotally and we're actually tracking?

Althea V. Stevens

Because if you can track that there was 1,100 young people that went through this program, then, like, why are we not tracking their progress?

Althea V. Stevens

Because isn't that the point of the program?

Diya Vij

In part, yes.

Diya Vij

Yes.

Diya Vij

And I believe that CUNY is starting to undergo a survey right now, a research study around what are the impacts of the internship program.

Althea V. Stevens

When was this program started?

Diya Vij

2017.

Althea V. Stevens

So this program has been going on since 2017.

Althea V. Stevens

It's 2026, almost nine years later, and we don't, we're not tracking these young people to see the impact of the work.

Diya Vij

We have anecdotal data.

Diya Vij

We have data from CUNY.

Diya Vij

We have data from cultural organizations.

Diya Vij

But the Department of Cultural Affairs has not done a comprehensive study.

Althea V. Stevens

Well, maybe we should, right?

Althea V. Stevens

If this is a program we're toting and saying that,

Althea V. Stevens

This is helping with diversity.

Althea V. Stevens

We should actually be tracking it and using it to do that work.
