Jerry Mikorenda testifies on stalled She Built NYC statues
Jerry Mikorenda, author of a book on Elizabeth Jennings Graham, says She Built NYC selected women for statues in 2018 but no progress has been made on four designs, and criticizes DCLA's lack of transparency and delayed FOIL response.
It's on now?
Okay.
Hi, I'm Jerry Mike Arenda, author of America's First Freedom Writer.
In 2018, She Built New York asked residents to nominate and select a woman in each borough for statues.
It seemed like a straightforward project, a layup in basketball terms.
Then the pandemic came.
Two administrations changed hands.
Three years later, no progress has been made on any of the four new designs.
Where have all the statues gone?
It's been eight years.
2027 is around the corner.
In 2019, a memorial to Mother Krabini was put forth in Battery Park.
It was dedicated in 2020.
If the city leadership doesn't believe these heroic women deserve statues, it should just say so.
Fumbling the ball looks bad on any court.
If the city believes in the program, it should take the shot.
The Knicks finally did, but we're not waiting 53 years for the rock to drop.
Deliver the promise.
Thanks.
