Schulman reads Council Member Riley statement on Intro 405 and 947
Schulman reads a statement from Council Member Riley on Intro 405-A, the Healthy Kids Meals Bill, which would strengthen nutrition standards for children's meals at chain restaurants. Riley also discusses Intro 947, which would create a pathway for eligible tobacco bars facing financial hardship to relocate and resume operations under DOHMH oversight.
Now I would like to read a brief statement by Councilmember Riley on his bills.
Thank you, Chair Shulman and the committee for hearing two important pieces of legislation focused on the health of New Yorkers and supporting our local businesses.
First, Intro 504A, the Healthy Kids Meals Bill.
As a father of three, I know firsthand how challenging it can be to make healthy choices for our children when dining out.
Families should not have to sacrifice their children's health for convenience, and healthy options should not depend on where a family lives or chooses to eat.
This legislation establishes stronger nutrition standards for children's meals, including fruits, vegetables, healthier beverage options, and specific nutritional requirements for chain restaurants.
Our goal is simple.
Make healthier meals the standard, encourage good habits early, and give families greater confidence in the choices available to their children.
Next, Intro 947 addresses the operation of tobacco bars in New York City.
We recognize that longstanding businesses can face financial hardships that threaten their ability to remain operational.
This legislation creates a pathway for eligible, previously registered tobacco bars to relocate and resume operations subject to demonstrated financial hardship, Department of Health improvement, and applicable requirements.
It's about balancing economic opportunity with economic opportunity.
with responsible oversight and the interests of our communities.
I look forward to today's discussion and thank my colleagues, the legislative drafting team, and all stakeholders who have contributed to advancing these bills.
