Alex Lee describes 2501 86th Street demolition and asbestos concerns
Alex Lee, a resident of 86th Street, testifies about developer Sandu Group's project at 2501 86th Street, describing safety violations, an asbestos inspection claiming the site was asbestos-free, demolition starting in March 2026 before asbestos was found, a stop work order, and a judge voiding a permit over safety, urging DOB and DEP to protect residents.
Good morning, Councilman and Administration.
My name is Alex Lee.
I'm here to talk about the construction safety.
I'm deeply concerned about the community that I live in.
I am a resident on 2001 86th Street.
In my community, there's a developer, Sandu Group, who's building a homeless shelter at 86 and 2501 Street.
So since the initial application on 2022, there have been a lot of safety violations in this site, but most of them go unnoticed.
Most importantly, on April 2025,
Asbestos inspection has claimed this site was free of asbestos.
However, it's thought DOB provided demolition permit.
They started demolition on March 2026.
So the site was doing demolition.
However, the site was found asbestos on site.
So clearly the contractor have no safety concern about the resident around this very dense residential area.
So, however,
Since a lot of complaints to the department, the final stop work order has been issued to this issue.
But recently the contractor wanted to go back to start the demo work, but we have a judge to say due to the site was unsafe, so that
that permit was temporarily deleted, the contract had gone back to for demolition work.
Also, the area was considered a threshold and during the initial plan, they have to say this is a flat floor planning was contradicted with the construction
So we are concerned, we are hoping that DOP and DEP to pay attention to construction safety for the residents in this area.
Thank you.
Thank you so much, Mr.
Alex.
