Rana Bissassar describes peer counseling at Borden
Bissassar introduces himself as a retired Master Sergeant and Bronze Star recipient, a peer counselor at Borden since April 2024, and describes the aftercare program and community meetings.
Hello.
All right.
Good afternoon.
My name is Rana Bissessor.
and I'm a retired Master Sergeant of the United States Army.
And a Bronze Star recipient for action in combat.
I graduate from the University of Maryland College Park Overseas Campus, where I got my bachelor's in Bachelor of Science in Business and Management.
I have continued my education since, earning my New York City Certified Peer Specialist credential in 2024.
And certified recovery peer advocate in 2025.
My testimony today to tell you is a story of my transition from training and leading soldier during the
leading soldiers in war during the first half of my life.
To support people experiencing homelessness during the second.
I'm a peer counselor at Borden Avenue Veteran Residence since April 2024.
I draw on lived life experience and professional training
to offer non-clinical emotional
support, guidance, and mentorship.
Peer counseling connects in real who had overcome adversities such as mental health,
challenges, substance use disorder, trauma, or academic barriers.
With other familiar circumstances.
My Bronze Star and my certified recovery peer advocate
and my New York City peer special certification reflect two complementary foundations of my work.
Military experience that helped me build trust with the veterans and peer support training that equips me to support residents in their recovery.
Having counseled hundreds of soldiers on career progression and personal conduct, I bring mentorship-centered approach to peer support.
I strive to model the resilience
needed to navigate life's darkest moments.
Demonstrating how a soldier discipline and a counselor's empathy can work hand in hand.
Also recognition from Governor Scott in Florida, who also underscore administrative experience, bring to my work.
Extending my commitment to service from the field, the office, and the boardroom.
I completed my peer counseling internship with Borden and have brought his approach and commitment
to excellence to my work.
We're from day one.
I appreciate the opportunity to share how compassionate and dedication guide me, my support for board and clients today.
One of my main job also I do is the aftercare program.
And I talk to veterans on a daily basis.
Once a month at Borden, we do the community meeting.
All the staff will introduce themselves and tell them what they do.
And I tell them plainly, I'm here to help you.
Thank you very much for your testimony.
Thank you for your service.
And a real honor to be joined by someone who's a Bronze Star recipient.
Thanks for what you've done for the country as well.
Thank you.
Thank you.
