Council Member Paladino opposes COPA, criticizes council groupthink
Council Member Vickie Paladino speaks against COPA, arguing it infringes on private property rights and will stall sales. She also criticizes the council for killing the horse carriage industry and questions whether members have minds of their own.
Okay, let's cover 905A.
I will be voting no against Intro 905A because the private property owners should have the right to decide when and to whom they sell their own property.
This bill gives designated nonprofits priority in the purchasing process and puts additional restrictions on private sales.
This in itself is very questionable.
The government should not be dictating how the people sell property and how hard they have worked to maintain and own their property.
This bill potentially reduces property value and will stall all sales, which will create unnecessary burdens on the owner.
Private property ownership means something.
And I believe the government has the responsibility to respect these rights for these reasons.
And I also want to go into something else today.
What a heck of a day in New York City Council.
We managed to kill an industry.
That's 160 years old, and we're also managing to kill private home ownership.
You know what?
When is this group going to finally start to think as individuals and respect?
their constituents and actually understand and stop this group mentality of thinking and passing what is absolutely ridiculous.
COPPA should be a dead issue.
It was brought back out.
And now we're voting on it?
Another thing that's being steamrolled through the city council.
Does anybody in this room have a mind of their own?
Does anybody have a mind of their own?
Councilman, you're out of order.
Thank you.
I vote no on that.
Thank you very much for your time.
We're not voting yet.
Councilmember Zhuang, followed by Narcisse.
