Brooks-Powers asks how many juvenile cases were eligible for adjustment in fiscal year 2026 and how many were adjusted. Dessimore says about 9,000 cases came through intake and about 1,400 were adjusted, and says the adjustment rate is not where she wants it.

So it's a lot that we are putting together in terms of what our metrics is actually going to look like.

Frank Morano

Got it.

Frank Morano

Thank you.

Frank Morano

And thank you, Chair.

Selvena N. Brooks-Powers

Thank you.

Selvena N. Brooks-Powers

Sticking with juvenile probation adjustment and diversion, how many cases were eligible for adjustment in fiscal year 2026?

Selvena N. Brooks-Powers

And how many were actually adjusted?

Stacey Dessimore

Good morning again, Stacey Dessimore.

Stacey Dessimore

We had approximately 9,000 cases that came through intake and about 1,400 that were adjusted.

Stacey Dessimore

What is eligible for adjustment depends on the charges, depends on the circumstance of the case, and that's the process of an intake probation officer is to determine the eligibility and the suitability of the case to be diverted from court.

Stacey Dessimore

I know that our adjustment rate is not where we want it to be, and that is something that I am going to be working with my team.

Stacey Dessimore

We had started looking at the cases.

Stacey Dessimore

We want to make sure that we have the right staff in place to be able to effectively

Stacey Dessimore

assess a case and looking at that young person as a whole and seeing what that young person's strengths are, but also what are some of the challenges so that we can determine why can't we divert this case from court.

Stacey Dessimore

We want to divert as many suitable and possible cases from further court involvement, right?
