Chair closes public testimony, notes written testimony process, and adjourns
Brooks-Powers says the committee has heard from everyone who signed up to testify and invites anyone missed to complete a witness slip or raise their hand on Zoom. She notes written testimony can be submitted within 72 hours and adjourns the hearing.
Hi, Chris.
Time starts now.
Chris, you're on mute.
You got to unmute.
Can you hear me now?
We can hear you now.
All right.
Hey, hey, Sabina.
My name is Christopher Leon Johnson.
Thanks for having this hearing.
When I saw the ticker, I was like, oh, I'm going to touch spot.
This is nice.
For Intro 1104, I support Intro 1104.
I'm surprised that legal aid out of all the people was opposed to this bill.
And I know why, because...
They really want these kids to be in the dark when it comes to knowing their rights because it makes it easier with the Legal Aid Society to work with the district attorneys to
screw these people over, screw these same kids over when it comes to taking plea deals and ACDs for things that can easily be dropped.
If they took it to trial or even to where that they go to 30-30.
I think going forward that the city council need to amend that bill to where that the age go up to 24 years old because I was arrested when I was, I think I was 24 years old, way less than 21.
And I know how it feels to be 21 and get told that take a plea deal, not a plea deal, like ACD, but something that I knew about 30-30 that time that came to that drop.
But they don't want to escape.
about this stuff because they know that if this if people educate about their rights when it comes to being arrested
uh even to trial uh it makes the job harder for legal aid people and they rely on people being convicted of crimes or taking plea deals because that's how they stay
in compliance and a stoop to the district attorney's offices.
Well, my suggestion, Ms.
Powers, is that you amend the bill to where that age goes from 18 all the way to 24 years old.
I know 24 years adult, but you'd be surprised if you ever go to the court system and
New York City, I mean like Midtown Community Court and Red Hook Justice Center and Red Hook, not that far from here.
Time expired.
Yeah, so you'll be surprised that the people that you see in those waiting in the pews we've seen, and they're not only 24 and under, so.
That's my advice.
Just change the age to 24 years old or something like that.
Thank you.
Thank you for your testimony.
Thank you, Chris.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you for behaving.
I will.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
All righty.
