Brooks-Powers thanks Ogbang and says she could not tell he was nervous. She encourages him to join organizations at NYU, explore council internships, and says the council must better communicate programs to young people.

Member of the Public

What are we doing?

Mercedes Narcisse

I'm in agreement with you.

Mercedes Narcisse

I'm going to stop right there and chair.

Mercedes Narcisse

Thank you.

Selvena N. Brooks-Powers

Thank you so much, and thank you to this panel.

Selvena N. Brooks-Powers

You are now dismissed.

Selvena N. Brooks-Powers

And the next panel we will call will be Theodore Haywood and Prince Obang Jr.

Member of the Public

You may begin.

Member of the Public

Just come off of mute.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

Hello, hello, counsel.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

Thank you for allowing me to come up here and talk.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

I'm currently a junior at NYU, and I came here to basically learn more about the criminal justice system in itself and learn more facts about it.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

One alarming trend that really made me question a lot of things was how

Prince Ogbang Jr.

Youth arrests have gone up 50%.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

That is a little too alarming for my liking.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

I feel like we need to invest more in our youth.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

We need to invest more in our communities.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

For me, for example, I grew up in the projects, the Morris housing projects in the Bronx, and I feel like the government is not doing enough to help the youth in general.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

They're not providing resources.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

They're not providing mentorship.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

They're not allocating funds in the right way.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

One way I'm trying to help my community is by joining community-based organizations.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

One community-based organization I'm a part of is the BLOC, the Bronx Leadership Organizing Center.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

I feel like mentorship is very important.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

Right now, I have a mentor in the block, and he has helped me throughout my whole, through high school to now.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

So I feel like mentorship is what we need to give to our youth.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

It's really hard coming up here speaking because not a lot of youth are around me.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

But I feel like if you...

Prince Ogbang Jr.

give more mentorship to the youth, there'll be more people like me coming up here to speak and learning more about the criminal justice system.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

And we need to provide more resources and more money to these programs so we can help our youth.

Prince Ogbang Jr.

And it creates a snowball effect if you think about it.
