Restler supports ATI guide and urges decarceration
Restler supports Chair Stevens' legislation to create a comprehensive ATI and ATD guide. He says the Mamdani plan is a step, but the city must center decarceration and drive the population back to pre-Adams levels.
I also strongly support Chair Stevens'legislation to develop a comprehensive plan, a comprehensive guide of all ATI and ATD programs so that we can make sure public defenders and judges are aware of every possible program
that might be a good fit for a child.
Like our public advocate said, I'm great.
that Mayor Mumdani and his team announced a plan for how we're going to be able to better care for the young people who are in custody, in detention today.
There should not be kids sleeping in classrooms.
But we need to center decarceration and reducing
urgently reducing the unnecessary incarceration of our young people and driving that number down back to the pre-Eric Adams total.
We can do it.
We've done it before.
It's going to take a whole-of-government approach.
It's going to need to be a priority like it hasn't been before.
And with Chair Stevens leading the way, I'm hopeful that we can get there.
Thank you so much.
