Stevens asks Clark about missing daily detention updates
Stevens asks about Clark's testimony that her office does not receive daily detention updates. Clark says she receives daily Rikers lists but not Horizon or Crossroads lists, making it hard to assess who is inside and who might be released to alternatives.
I just have a couple more questions because I have some colleagues who have some questions as well.
One of the things you mentioned in your testimony was around the daily updates of the detention.
Could you talk a little bit about that and why aren't you getting these daily updates and what that actually can do for your office and why you would want that?
All right, so if we're talking about reducing the population, which we need to do because we all know that there's overcrowding, right?
I don't want any of the kids in there if we don't have to.
But when you look at the charges that they're charging and the conduct, some people are going to be there, right?
But not everybody should.
And if there's ways that we can deal with them on the outside, you know, we should be able.
In order for me to be able to evaluate who is inside, I need to know who is inside.
Because when the arrest first happened and the judge may set bail or we get to retain them because they're in the youth part, we know it that day.
Until the next court day, we don't know if they made it out because they made bail or et cetera.
So if we had a daily list, we get it for Rikers.
I know who's in Rikers every single day.
And as I work with defenders and everyone else, if they want me to look at a particular
The defendant or you want the city wants me to prioritize those long stayers or those who are in custody.
I need to know who they are.
We don't get that as from horizons or crossroads.
I can't answer why.
Just telling you that I don't.
But if I had it, it would be more helpful for us to be able to evaluate who those young people are, what their needs are, whether or not there is an alternative to the detention that they're in now in order for us to assess them.
But without knowing who's there every day, I can't do it.
Yeah, I think that's really helpful because I know, so I just want to also point out, we did meet with all the DAs.
I believe we're still trying to meet with Brooklyn, but everyone was like, Darcelle Clark is going to be there.
She got it.
Our sister's speaking for us.
And so I just want to be clear.
They all said that you're speaking on behalf of all of them.
Oh, God.
I can tell you about the Bronx.
I can't tell you what's happening in every other borough, but I can tell you the Bronx.
