Stevens calls for release of 150 youth and cites COVID-19 precedent
Stevens recalls calling for the release of 150 young people from secure detention in September and says the call was a response to an emergency. She cites March 2020, when city agencies, courts, prosecutors, and defenders safely reduced the detention population during COVID-19.
This is why in September I called for the release of 150 young people from secure detention.
That call was not radical.
It was a response to an emergency.
In March 2020, when COVID-19 threatened the health of everyone
inside those facilities, the city, the court, prosecutors, and defenders came together and safely brought the detention population down within weeks.
We know what can be done.
We need a greater urgency.
