Union and Chair discuss NYPD response and contraband
Wells and Stevens discuss the NYPD response, persistent contraband, and the broader crisis. Wells says when a facility is out of control, outside help is needed; Robinson says there are no consequences and alleges pizza parties rewarded youth after the riot.
By the way, I just want to be on record.
I agree not letting it in my PD because I might have escalated, but I hear your concern as well.
No, no, but, but, but, but, but.
When a place is out of control and people are getting hurt, both residents and children, you got to do something different.
You cannot allow.
I'm not, listen, I'm not against, but a situation where there's nobody getting control, you need help.
Okay?
And you can have control help.
You can't say, oh, well, and it was downplayed.
But meanwhile.
This delegate, this vice president was out there, went to the hospital, people got hurt.
They're still, the security is not consistent.
People have been observed not going through their security.
Contraband.
This union is against, I can't say enough times.
Contraband puts everybody at risk.
They're still in contravention.
They're people still, they still have scalpels, okay?
Yeah.
They're getting it.
When this rise was happening, a mother went on TV and said, I speak to my kid every day.
How does that happen?
Nobody has everyday telephone privilege.
How is that happening?
What's the answer to that?
Did anybody investigate what this mother was talking about?
They say, how is this happening?
They still have pictures.
So my point is what you said earlier.
This is a crisis, and you have to address the crisis.
And I don't think the crisis is being addressed.
There's nothing that says...
This Christ is being dressed.
I agree.
On the same page.
And also, there's no consequences.
It's almost like...
The agency is rewarding bad behavior because there's no way that you can have juveniles part of a major riot or gang assaults,
attempted murder in the place, and then less than 24 hours later, they are having pizza parties for the individuals that were cutting and slicing and stabbing.
Other youth as well as the staff that work at those facilities.
Stuff like that, you just cannot have, you cannot have a deputy commissioner throw pizza parties and reward kids when they do bad things on these halls like that.
That's unacceptable.
