Chair Abreu opens Vision Zero oversight hearing
Chair Abreu opens the hearing, introduces himself as Majority Leader and Chair of Transportation and Infrastructure, and frames Vision Zero around the principle that traffic deaths are preventable. He notes 205 traffic fatalities in 2025, a 31% reduction from 2014, but says recent tragedies show more work remains.
Good morning and welcome to today's hearing.
I'm Councilmember Sean Abreu, Majority Leader and Chair of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
Since its launch in 2014, Vision Zero has fundamentally changed how New York City approaches street safety.
The central principle is simple.
Traffic deaths and serious injuries are preventable.
And every New Yorker deserves to travel safely, whether they are walking, cycling, driving, or using another form of transportation.
Over the years, we have meaningful progress towards this goal.
In 2025, New York City recorded 205 traffic fatalities, a 31% reduction when compared to 2014.
However, any life lost on our streets is one too many, and recent tragedies remind us that there is still considerable work ahead.
