Council Member Santosuosso questions DOT on Super Speeders timeline
Council Member Santosuosso asks DOT about the timeline for implementing the Stop Super Speeders program, originally hoped for May 2027. Flynn says DOT is eager but cites software, back-end, DOF, and state DMV complexity and hopes to start early elements and testing.
Councilmember Santos-Wilso, followed by Councilmember Justin Sanchez.
Thank you, Chair.
Commissioner Flynn, thank you.
First of all, again, thank you for the 17th Avenue Bridge.
I'm going to keep thanking you because I'm thrilled.
And thank you for sort of being of the same mind on the Super Speeders Act.
You know, I think at this point, really, advocates are mostly concerned about timeline for implementation.
The original hope was May from the state bill that was passed.
Are we looking like that's possible?
And if not, what barriers are there to timely implementation?
Thank you, Councilmember, and thank you for being such a great partner on this legislation.
Yeah, we're really proud to have advocated and championed for the state legislation and appreciate the Council's partnership to move it forward.
We're very eager to stand the program up as quickly as humanly possible.
It is a new...
Very new program, right?
This is going to be really among the first in the nation and probably the largest at this scale.
So there's a lot of complexity there.
There's software and back end stuff.
There's also things that are kind of dependent on partners we need to work with.
And just generally the coordination with, for example, Department of Finance, the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
And so there may be some aspects of the schedule that are more under our control than others.
Our commitment is to do it as quickly as possible.
I could talk a little more specifically about some of the other schedule aspects, but one thing we would like to do in any scenario is at least if there are things that are maybe out of our control for the full
program rollout, we think that we could at least get some early elements and testing going in the meantime.
