DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn introduces Vision Zero progress
DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn introduces himself and his colleagues, Deputy Commissioner Eric Beaton and Chief of Staff Madeline Labadie. He says traffic deaths have reached historic lows, with the second fewest since 1910, and pedestrian fatalities at an all-time low.
Thank you.
Good morning, Chair Abreu and members of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
I'm Mike Flynn, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation.
With me today is Eric Beaton, Deputy Commissioner for Transportation Planning and Management, and Madeline Labadee, my Chief of Staff.
Thank you for the opportunity to testify on behalf of Mayor Zoran Mamdani about Vision Zero and the administration's street safety strategy.
October has been an exciting and busy month as the city's ramping up our reimagined Vision Zero approach.
Vision Zero is a comprehensive multi-agency priority initiative to build multiple layers of protection to both prevent crashes in the first place and minimize severity when they do occur.
Our strategy is working.
Earlier this month, we announced that traffic deaths have reached historic lows over the first three quarters of 2026, with the second fewest traffic deaths since the city started tracking data in 1910.
Pedestrian fatalities are at an all-time low, and to date, this is the second safest year on record for our streets.
But we know that one death is one too many.
