Council Member Nurse raises concerns about community advisory board rollout
Nurse says her office helps residents transfer out of shelters but facilities do not improve. She describes a stabbing in July and a botched CAB rollout, urging DHS to improve community engagement after violence.
Council Member Nurse.
Thank you, Chair.
I don't know if I have questions, I have comments, but I will say that there's a lot of our cases in our office are requests to transfer out of the shelters in the immediate area.
And for the most part, we've been very successful to get people out.
but it doesn't necessarily translate into improvements in those existing facilities.
And our immediate goal is just to focus on the person who comes into the office.
You all have been helpful with that.
I will say that when it comes to the cabs,
In the past, we had Magnolia House, like we had some issues, but like we were able to get the cab up and running.
And for the most part, we've had very little communication to our office.
But it was a pretty quick process.
Recently, in another cab that we've gotten set up, and you all, we've been in communication about this, but I would be remiss if I didn't put it on the record for my community that's watching.
I feel like there was really a failure to stand up the cab in a really efficient way.
And thoughtful way.
We had a stabbing in July and the first community meeting didn't happen until sometime in September and it was kind of a botched rollout and I think we're now getting back on track and so I think it's really important to land,
especially that first gathering with community residents after an incidence of violence and there was like a child involved, like this is important to roll these things out really well and in a thoughtful way.
And so I really, I know you all have, your senior staff has really stepped in and been very helpful, but I think that it might be worth looking at that process.
for rolling out the cab because I just didn't have a good experience with that, unfortunately.
So I don't have a question.
Thanks, Chair.
No, it's an important anecdote to note.
So thank you.
