Dinowitz asks how MOECM can help after Norwood News closure
Dinowitz says his district lost the Norwood News and asks what the office does or can do to support local media. Sidahmed calls the closure devastating and says the office works on the sector as a whole.
Councilmember Denowitz.
Thank you, Chair.
I think you had just made reference to some of the local newspapers.
And in my district, we actually lost a local newspaper, the Norwood News.
Have you heard of this?
Of course.
If you could just share some of the work that your office does or can do, because as we're losing papers, we're also losing a critical part of our civic structure.
What work your office does to support our local media and what further work you can do and investments you can make to bring back the Norwood News?
I appreciate that question.
And I think everyone in local media was devastated to hear about the loss of Norwood News.
It was the breeding ground for a lot of great Bronx journalists and is a publication that I think was near and dear to many people's hearts.
So we were all devastated to hear about that.
And it speaks to the broader trend that I've spoken about in my testimony of the different.
conditions that we're currently under to keep local news alive.
So that is really the whole entire purpose that this office was created for and why Local Law 83 was put into place was to help preserve these community institutions like the Norwood News.
