Q&A

Lee on bike lane installation costs and 50-mile target

New York City Council · May 29, 2026 · starts 1:05:40 · 1 min 46 sec

Lee asks about average bike lane cost and whether DOT will build 50 miles of protected bike lanes in FY27. Flynn says costs vary widely and they expect substantial increase in output with historic investment.

Linda Lee

On average, how much does it cost to install a bike lane?

Linda Lee

Do you have that information?

Mike Flynn

There's definitely a lot of variables, I think, as much or maybe in some ways even more than the bus lanes, because it depends on the specifics of the design of the bike lane, the concrete, islands, or traffic signal changes.

Mike Flynn

So I'm not sure if we have a rough range.

Eric Beaton

We can get back to you with the range, but as the commissioner said, it's a very wide range, right?

Eric Beaton

A fully built out greenway, you know, where we did get a lot of capital money in this budget as well, but the cost to that is very different from a painted on street lane.

Linda Lee

Yeah, if the agency could come up with some type of breakdowns.

Linda Lee

Of square miles for this type of bike lane versus that type of bike lane.

Linda Lee

Just something for us to have some baseline of how this stuff gets priced out.

Linda Lee

That would be very helpful for us and for members of the public.

Mike Flynn

Will do.

Linda Lee

With this funding, will DOT be able to build out the 50 miles of protected bike lanes in fiscal 27?

Mike Flynn

So, you know, again, I'm not able to give an exact number yet, but it is a historic level of investment, and therefore we're expecting

Mike Flynn

a very substantial increase in the output of bike lane.

Linda Lee

Compared to years past, you'd say?

Mike Flynn

Yes.

Mike Flynn

And increasing even more in the future years, right?

Mike Flynn

And I didn't mention that earlier, but part of it, of course, is once we get the funding in July, as we hire up, you know, as we expand these contracts, et cetera, all the things it takes to build these,

Mike Flynn

we're going to do as much as we can this year, but we also expect very significant growth in future years.

Linda Lee

I'm going to ask another set of questions, the last set of questions before I pass it on, and then I'll come back for more.
