Lee questions red light camera expansion to 600 intersections

New York City Council · May 29, 2026 · starts 0:24:37 · 1 min 14 sec

Lee asks about safety enhancements in communities with new red light cameras. Forgione reports 450 intersections currently covered, with all 600 to be completed by year's end.

Linda Lee

And in October 2024, Governor Hochul signed into law the expansion of the existing red light camera program.

Linda Lee

Sorry.

Linda Lee

Allowing the city to quadruple the number of red light cameras 150 to 600, marking the largest expansion of the program.

Linda Lee

And the executive plan includes $97.4 million in FY27 and $230.1 million over the five-year plan.

Linda Lee

What additional safety enhancements have DOT implemented or will implement within the communities where the additional cameras are in use?

Eric Beaton

Just while they're looking at information, a slight point of clarification, it's 600 intersections rather than cameras.

Linda Lee

Okay.

Linda Lee

Thank you.

Margaret Forgione

Thank you for that question.

Margaret Forgione

So regarding the red light camera expansion to date, we have 450 intersections covered by red light cameras and about 600 cameras because, of course, at each intersection we can put a camera on both approaches.

Margaret Forgione

And by the end of this year, we'll have all 600 intersections completed.

Linda Lee

Okay.

Linda Lee

Sorry, I thought I felt a sneeze coming on.
