Brewer asks about Manhattan tow pound and NYCHA safety
Brewer asks about the lack of a tow pound in Manhattan since Cuomo closed Pier 76. Ryan says real estate costs remain challenging but they continue looking with DCAS. Brewer also asks about NYCHA PSA funding, with Tisch reporting record crime reductions in NYCHA.
Toll pound, always my question.
No one in Manhattan, is that a problem?
Are you ever going to find a toll pound in the borough of Manhattan?
It continues to be, unfortunately, the same challenge that we had in the past.
It's just since, it's unfortunately just the cost of real estate in Manhattan is really challenging.
We've had a few sites where we thought we might be able to have a somewhat smaller footprint but still have something so that people didn't have to travel quite as far if they were booted or other things like that with their car.
Unfortunately, those have fallen through, but we do continue to look with DCAS to see if we can restore a footprint to Manhattan.
Okay, just because I had the same question.
Since Cuomo closed Pier 76.
That was quite a few years ago.
Yes.
Okay.
And then what, NYCHA, Bureau getting any more money, less money in terms of PSA, that is a really important division of NYPD.
The reason I ask is I believe, I love NYCHA, I love the residents, I strongly believe that if we were to focus on NYCHA, not just you,
But in a holistic way, you'd have far fewer issues.
So I am very proud to tell you that in NYCHA specifically, New York City is having its safest start to the year on record.
With major crime there, down 10%.
Murders, down 43%.
Shooting incidents, down 24%.
Shooting victims, down 30%.
Robberies, down 24%.
And burglaries, down 19%.
The crime story in NYCHA this year, or the crime picture in NYCHA this year, is vastly improved from last year.
NYCHA and the Bronx are the two places where we are seeing the largest crime reductions.
And I give a tremendous amount of credit to the chief of department and the chief of crime control strategies on their precision
policing, which is focusing additional resources where the violent crime occurs.
And sometimes you can set a strategy.

In this one, they put the strategy in place and they are driving real results.
