Feliz and LaPetrie discuss federal and state coordination for World Cup
Feliz asks how NYPD will coordinate with federal and state authorities for event safety. Chief LaPetrie details bus screening operations in New Jersey, Penn Station rail screening for 15,000 people, and coordination with Amtrak and MTA.
Speaking about event, how will the NYPD work with federal and state authorities to ensure participants are safe getting to and from the events?
Hand in hand.
The chief can, do you want to talk through the buses and the trains and how you're coordinating with partners on that?
Sure.
On the eight game days at MetLife, we have identified four separate locations that over 200 buses will be starting in New Jersey,
swept in New Jersey, with an NYPD present to make sure that they are swept properly.
Those buses then come into New York City.
Obviously, we're not able to park 200 buses.
In and around the four identified areas.
So we will start with 45 buses at a time.
That footprint at those locations start 12 hours prior to those buses being parked there.
Obviously those locations have to be swept by our counterterrorism team.
They then have to be, the footprint has to stay there until the buses actually arrive.
Those buses, each one of those buses.
I've assigned two uniformed officers to, again, to continue to observe those buses, to make sure that, you know, they're safe to go back into New Jersey.
Again, very dynamic.
The 42nd Street will be the street that we will be using that will be closed to just bus and emergency vehicles going through the tunnel into New Jersey.
As far as the rails, we have identified approximately, we think, upwards of 15,000 people.
To go through Penn Station and then ultimately have to get screened by the NYPD to go again into New Jersey.
So it's a huge undertaking.
On top of doing all that on the eight game days, there will be numerous watch parties throughout New York City.
And again, we've gone from 32 teams to 48 teams.
We've gone from approximately 150 games to 200 games.
Every game that is being played will be front and center in New York City.
As far as the rails working with our federal partners and Amtrak, so actually next week I will be chairing a meeting with the Northeast Corridor from Washington, D.C.
Up to and through New York City with Amtrak, MTA.
And all our rail partners to make sure that, again, it's seamless, it's safe.
And the federal government, the state government, and obviously the NYPD are working very, very close.
