Feliz and Tisch discuss World Cup watch party plans

New York City Council · Jun 1, 2026 · starts 1:17:54 · 2 min 18 sec

Feliz asks whether public watch parties will be scaled back due to NYPD concerns. Tisch says the mayor will announce robust watch parties across all five boroughs, but notes the department must view FIFA events through a counterterrorism lens while managing standard summer events simultaneously.

Oswald J. Feliz

Speaking about the World Cup and also watch parties, there's been numerous articles which stated that public events, including World Cup watch parties on open streets and plazas and parks, will be scaled back due to NYPD concerns.

Oswald J. Feliz

Is it true?

Oswald J. Feliz

And if yes, can you talk to us about some of the concerns?

Oswald J. Feliz

And also, is the plan or the hope to have police presence at every single watch party?

Jessica Tisch

My understanding is that the mayor is going to announce a very robust set of watch parties for FIFA around all...

Jessica Tisch

Five boroughs, which will run the length of the tournament.

Jessica Tisch

We do have, that we know of, already announced the five FIFA fan zones that will be

Jessica Tisch

five FIFA fan zones, one in each borough.

Jessica Tisch

So my hope and my expectation is that we are going to have a lot of festivities in New York City around the World Cup.

Jessica Tisch

Obviously, we want to celebrate.

Jessica Tisch

We need to celebrate safely.

Jessica Tisch

I already told you about the need to look at all things FIFA through a counterterrorism lens.

Jessica Tisch

That's what this department is doing.

Jessica Tisch

don't have unlimited resources, and we also have a lot of other things that are occurring in New York City.

Jessica Tisch

You know, when a country hosts the World Cup or the Olympics, usually they cancel everything else going on in that city at that time.

Jessica Tisch

We didn't in New York City.

Jessica Tisch

We're still having the Puerto Rican Day Parade.

Jessica Tisch

We're having lots of the Pride Parade.

Jessica Tisch

We are having many or nearly all of the standard large-scale events in New York City this summer that we would have in a summer with, like, none of these.

Jessica Tisch

Events going on and so I would appreciate it if you could think about the demands on this department in in that context.

Jessica Tisch

We would like to facilitate a lot.

Jessica Tisch

Perhaps we won't be able to facilitate everything but there will be a lot of celebrating in New York City.
