Council Member Wong on trash bin reimbursement program and outreach

New York City Council · Jun 9, 2026 · starts 0:51:56 · 1 min 14 sec

Council Member Phil Wong asks about delays in trash bin reimbursement for STAR recipients and whether outreach was sufficient. Commissioner Lee says the program has been extended to September 8th and DOF is working with the sanitation department, and will provide the number of Queens homeowners who received relief.

Phil Wong

Thank you, Chair.

Phil Wong

Commissioner, I have two questions, one regarding the trash bin reimbursement and notice, and another regarding the co-op and condo abatement compliance.

Phil Wong

My

Phil Wong

First question is that small property owners had to comply with the official bin rule in June 2026, which was later extended to after Labor Day.

Phil Wong

Now, some star recipients were eligible for reimbursement support.

Phil Wong

But my office would get phone calls that many of them are still waiting for these reimbursements.

Phil Wong

My question is how many Queens homeowners actually received that relief and was their outreach strong enough?

Phil Wong

Because it seemed to me that people don't know about, still people don't know about this reimbursement program.

Phil Wong

Can we extend this past Labor Day?

Phil Wong

Please answer that.

Richard Lee

So I'll have to get back to you on the exact number.

Richard Lee

Okay.

Richard Lee

I'll have to provide that.

Richard Lee

We have extended the program to September 7th.

Richard Lee

September 8th after holidays.

Richard Lee

So we have extended the program.

Richard Lee

We're working closely with the sanitation department.

Richard Lee

But September 8th is the new deadline.

Richard Lee

And so we have extended it as per your advocacy.

Richard Lee

Thank you for letting us know.

Phil Wong

Okay, thank you.
