CM Narcisse questions OMB on Rockaway trauma center and Canarsie rec center

New York City Council · Jun 9, 2026 · starts 3:58:10 · 2 min 18 sec

Narcisse voices support for the Rockaway trauma center, noting 100,000 people rely on one hospital and a police officer was lost due to response time. She also asks for construction dollars for a Canarsie rec center for youth, noting she has $500,000 secured and emphasizing prevention over crisis response.

Mercedes Narcisse

Thank you, Chair.

Mercedes Narcisse

And we can be the catalyst for this process and make sure it happens.

Mercedes Narcisse

Thank you.

Mercedes Narcisse

And you're so alert.

Mercedes Narcisse

And thank you for your time.

Mercedes Narcisse

Usually people get tired at a certain time.

Mercedes Narcisse

But as chair of hospitals committee and ER nurse for many years in level one trauma center,

Mercedes Narcisse

I want to really put my support behind the trauma center we're talking about on the Rockbury Peninsula.

Mercedes Narcisse

Peninsula needed for a long time, and I hope that we can address this.

Mercedes Narcisse

More than 100,000 people live in the peninsula, and they only rely on one single hospital for service.

Mercedes Narcisse

We lost a police officer because of a time-consuming, and you know when you're in an emergency, it's a tick-tock moment.

Mercedes Narcisse

Anytime you can be gone.

Mercedes Narcisse

And we don't want that to happen, so I'm hoping that you look into this.

Mercedes Narcisse

This is very important.

Mercedes Narcisse

Now, coming back to my District 46, Canarsie has lived through a lot.

Mercedes Narcisse

When we're talking about gun violence, our youth and our kids really want to have a rec center, and they've been asking for it.

Mercedes Narcisse

You know, I play basketball in the court with them, and that's all they ask me, when we're going to have a rec center.

Mercedes Narcisse

We don't have no swimming pool, and I think that's a great opportunity for you.

Mercedes Narcisse

for us to address those.

Mercedes Narcisse

This is a prevention.

Mercedes Narcisse

You know, as a nurse, we do preventive, you know, we have to prevent things from happening.

Mercedes Narcisse

So I hope that we can work together on this.

Mercedes Narcisse

I already have a steady money, half a million dollars, and I'm hoping that if anything, anywhere in your budget, you can put some construction dollars to help us out to save our kids.

Speaker

So thank you for raising it.

Speaker

Happy to talk to you more about it.

Speaker

And, you know, it's the next generation of Knicks players on that basketball court.

UNKNOWN

I'm a mom.

UNKNOWN

What can I tell you?

UNKNOWN

I grew up with them.

UNKNOWN

Now I'm still playing basketball with them.

UNKNOWN

So I don't want them to die.

UNKNOWN

And I'm sure you don't want that, too.

UNKNOWN

You seem you're a smart man and you know prevention is better than curing.

UNKNOWN

So I hope we can sit down and discuss that and find a way for both projects.

UNKNOWN

Very important.

UNKNOWN

Thank you.

Speaker

Thank you.
