Deputy Speaker Williams questions Comptroller on Southeast Queens flooding claims process

New York City Council · Jun 9, 2026 · starts 5:02:28 · 1 min 42 sec

Williams raises flooding claims in Southeast Queens and asks if the Comptroller's office has resources to help residents file claims. Levine explains his office can't help fill out claims due to adjudication conflicts, but is launching an effort to partner with every council member to educate residents and improve the process.

UNKNOWN

Okay, last but very final question about just Southeast Queens flooding.

UNKNOWN

So one of the things, and I haven't really spoken to you about this, I should have added that to my list of things that I spoke to you about when we met, is the claims process.

UNKNOWN

And I know it's tricky because it's a legal document, but just wanted to know if your office has done anything to advance on making sure communities who are seeking to file complaints for like flooding related issues.

UNKNOWN

have the proper resources to do that.

UNKNOWN

And if you think that the city's capital investment adequately prioritizes communities.

Speaker

Yeah, this is people, not everyone knows that our office manages claims.

Speaker

And you obviously know if you live in Southeast Queens, and this is something I really want to partner with city council members on.

Speaker

Because technically my office is not allowed to help people fill out their claim because we are adjudicating it, so it would be a conflict.

Speaker

What we want to do is empower you and every council member to help provide that assistance in your offices, and we're actually launching an effort now to go to every council member.

Speaker

My wonderful team, led by Deputy Comptroller Alana Cantillo, is already working on this.

Speaker

We really would like to partner with the whole body so that you know how this works, you can help educate people, and also give us feedback if we can make the process easier.

Speaker

That we can do for sure.

Speaker

So I really want to work with you on this.

Linda Lee

Awesome.

Linda Lee

Thank you.

Linda Lee

Sorry, I don't know if I said we've been joined by Councilmember Maloney as well.
