Stevens and Asherall discuss integrating Saturday Night Lights into program model

New York City Council · Jun 23, 2026 · starts 0:22:12 · 1 min 59 sec

Stevens questions why SNL operates as a standalone program rather than being integrated into Beacon and Cornerstone models. Asherall says DYCD is exploring whether to fold SNL into a future concept paper and RFP.

Althea V. Stevens

Yeah, I think a lot of the work that's being done needs to be connected.

Althea V. Stevens

In your testimony, you spoke about one of the programs that I don't like as much, which is Saturday Night Lights programs, which is SNL.

Althea V. Stevens

I've never been shy to explain my thanks with that.

Althea V. Stevens

And you explained that SNL has been in both the beacons and in the cornerstones.

Althea V. Stevens

And one of the reasons why I don't like it is because it's a standalone program and it doesn't make sense.

Althea V. Stevens

And so my question is to you guys, are you guys looking to roll that just into the model moving forward?

Althea V. Stevens

And why wasn't that done originally to not just have that become part of the program model when you did one of these contract extensions or something like that?

Althea V. Stevens

It's on.

Althea V. Stevens

The green means it's on.

Althea V. Stevens

So turn it back.

Althea V. Stevens

Yeah.

Wanda Asherall

Okay, great.

Wanda Asherall

Thank you.

Wanda Asherall

I can't speak to how the timing and how it all rolled out with the SNL, but what I can say is this, is that we're not planning

Wanda Asherall

to have an RFP for the SNL, but we are looking at ways to realign it and think about whether or not, to your point, it makes most sense to integrate it into a future concept paper and an RFP.

Wanda Asherall

So that's the exercise that we are.

Wanda Asherall

Are doing internally to discuss, like, how does this live within the fabric of our community centers?

Althea V. Stevens

Yeah.

Althea V. Stevens

I mean, again, like, the program in itself, like, it makes sense, but it does not make sense to me as a standalone.

Althea V. Stevens

I think that it should be a part of the program, right?

Althea V. Stevens

And I think some of the, you know, it started out as a separate program.

Althea V. Stevens

And what happens is people hear things when it's good, then everybody wants it.

Althea V. Stevens

And so I think that it was one of those moments we should have stepped back and been like, wait a minute, is this something we could just expand throughout all of the portfolio opposed to having the touch points in the way we do.

Althea V. Stevens

So I'm happy to hear that that's something that's being considered as we're thinking about moving into a concept paper.
