De La Rosa questions student panel on classmate views about AI

New York City Council · Jun 24, 2026 · starts 3:27:36 · 4 min 8 sec

De La Rosa asks if the students' views against AI represent most classmates. Students confirm that peers who care about their future oppose AI, noting that while some use it for convenience, students understand it impacts learning and the environment. Odin notes AI use is uncommon at his consortium school where class discussions demand original thinking.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

Thank you so much.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

I have a couple questions.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

Any of you can answer this.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

But, you know, I often, I think there's sort of like an assumption that, you know, kids will do whatever to, like, make the work as easy as possible, right?

Carmen N. De La Rosa

If there's, like, a chatbot available, they're just asking, right?

Carmen N. De La Rosa

Is it your...

Carmen N. De La Rosa

Feeling that your views, that you don't want AI in the classroom because you know how important critical thinking is, that's been your general, you want more transparency and accountability.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

Do you think that's the view of most of your classmates, even the ones who use AI in the classroom?

Member of the Public - Arunamid Misha

I think like to understand the issue a lot of time as we are not adults a lot of time it's not necessarily I'm not being weird but not necessarily always important to

Member of the Public - Arunamid Misha

do whatever we want to do definitely it's going to make our works easier definitely it's going to maybe

Member of the Public - Arunamid Misha

make us less think about it but what's the whole purpose of education is the main question so if we do really want to learn or make ourselves smart or want to

Member of the Public - Arunamid Misha

critical think then we would definitely need a process of education where we need to think about something before answering, not necessarily a bot telling us or

Member of the Public - Arunamid Misha

doing works for us, because at the end of the day, that is definitely not good for us under any circumstances, because first of all, it basically lacks all the opportunities for us to learn anything.

Member of the Public - Arunamid Misha

The whole purpose is learning.

Member of the Public - Arunamid Misha

So definitely there must be some students, of course, who wants, not a lot of people, because people who genuinely cares about their future or wants to learn would not.

Member of the Public - Arunamid Misha

Follows such kind of things or would do.

Member of the Public - Arunamid Misha

But most of the students, whenever I talk with my peers, and as I also mentioned that we had a conference about talking about issues like that, people absolutely hate AI, no matter how much they,

Member of the Public - Arunamid Misha

Some people might say that they like it, but they do not like it.

Member of the Public - Arunamid Misha

They understand that how this is also impacting the environment in many different ways.

Member of the Public - Odin Adeller

Yeah, I believe also at my school is very uncommon.

Member of the Public - Odin Adeller

I don't think I notice anyone using AI, especially, which in general, especially for like the writing and the art that's being done.

Member of the Public - Odin Adeller

Because I feel like when we're writing, like for example, my playwriting class, like this is art that people have.

Member of the Public - Odin Adeller

want to be creative about and they want to share to their class, they want to feel proud of it.

Member of the Public - Odin Adeller

Some of it could be connected to maybe issues that they feel, you know, that they care a lot about or personal experiences and it would just be, it would feel so hollow to, for example, use AI for that.

Member of the Public - Odin Adeller

Or in my classes, you know, we have these class discussions a lot.

Member of the Public - Odin Adeller

My school's a consortium school, so that's probably why, right?

Member of the Public - Odin Adeller

If you're using AI to write something, I don't think you're going to be having a very compelling, let's say, defense of your opinions or your ideas, and you're not probably going to be able to engage very well in the conversation.

Member of the Public - Odin Adeller

It's going to be boring.

Member of the Public - Odin Adeller

And I think students like being able to share their views on various issues and back it up with their own ideas and with their own evidence.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

Thank you so much to this panel.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

I appreciate your testimony today.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

Are there any other students in the room that want to testify?

Carmen N. De La Rosa

And you filled out a slip?

Carmen N. De La Rosa

Okay, so this panel is dismissed.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

You can go back to your seats.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

I want to thank you.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

Thank you.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

And you guys can come up.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

I'm just going to need to know what you're doing.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

Yeah.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

Students, come on up.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

It almost reminds me of, like the AI technology is pretty tempting.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

It's like very tempting.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

It almost reminds me of social media.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

Like students, they want to be on social media, but I spoke to a lot of students who were so happy when they banned the phones because it takes it away from them because they want to be engaged with their friends.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

So are you, are you,

Carmen N. De La Rosa

12 to a student.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

Are you testifying?

Carmen N. De La Rosa

In the back row?

Carmen N. De La Rosa

No?

Carmen N. De La Rosa

Okay, just you.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

Okay.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

You're the only student.

Carmen N. De La Rosa

Okay, please state your name for the record and you may begin your testimony.
