Greg Pak calls AI in schools a form of child abuse

New York City Council · Jun 24, 2026 · starts 4:23:41 · 2 min 13 sec

Comic book writer Greg Pak calls AI in schools 'child abuse,' arguing that writing is thinking and drawing is seeing. He says kids who type prompts instead of doing the work themselves are denied human learning experiences. He calls AI a tool of liars and scammers and warns billionaires can push a 'racism button' on these machines.

Thank you.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

Thank you so much.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

I appreciate you having us, allowing us to speak.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

My name is Greg Pak.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

I am a comic book writer and also a New York City resident.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

Had a child go through the public schools, product of public schools myself.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

I am here because I believe that AI

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

in the schools is child abuse.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

It is a form of child abuse.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

I don't use those terms lightly.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

Writing is thinking.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

Drawing is seeing.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

If you get a kid to type in a prompt and generate text, type in a prompt and generate an image, and you say, good,

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

You have failed.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

In fact, you have denied that child a human experience of thinking and learning and doing stuff.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

Kids are not products, and they're not in school to create products.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

Kids are in school to learn, to go through the process.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

We should be about process, not products.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

And...

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

AI is also a tool of liars, scammers, and fraud.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

This is its primary use case.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

Having kids use AI in schools sets them up to become losers who can't think for themselves and can't do things and cannot be part of a community.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

When a kid draws, a kid has to look at you.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

A kid studies your face.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

A kid takes note of the world and the people around them.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

If you deny a kid that chance by having them just type in a prompt, they learn nothing and they do not participate in a wider community.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

AI is child abuse, I'll say it again.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

I also just wanted to take note, so I support the AI moratorium in the public schools, and in fact, we should make it, we should just burn all those machines.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

I also want to take note of the fact that these,

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

There's a racism button on these machines, and the billionaires can push that racism button on the machines as they have.

Member of the Public - Greg Pak

And we don't want that.
