Q&A

Won asks about Solar One training numbers, 12K target gap, and CUF figure

New York City Council · Jun 26, 2026 · starts 1:31:21 · 1 min 10 sec

Won asks how many people have been trained at Solar One (Jung doesn't have the number but says CUNY campuses will train 6,000 annually once open). Won notes only one facility is open, the 12,000 apprenticeship target is far from being met, and the Center for Urban Future found only 2,184 net new green jobs in 2023. She asks if EDC accepts this figure.

Julie Won

How many people have been trained at Solar One?

Sam Jung

I don't have that discrete number, but I'm happy to get back to you at a later point in time.

Sam Jung

For the community campuses, once all

Sam Jung

of those are opened, they're expected to train 6,000 students annually.

Julie Won

Okay, because the plan was setting a target of more than 12,000 New Yorkers for green occupations through the apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs, but it seems that only one is currently open and the number of people trained is unknown.

Julie Won

And the Center for Urban Future, as you heard from the chair, only added roughly 2,184 net new green jobs in 2023.

Julie Won

Do you accept this figure?

Julie Won

And if not, what is your current count, which is what we asked you earlier, but you did not have an answer for us for?

Sam Jung

We haven't seen that figure.

Sam Jung

It doesn't seem to align with the methodology that we've deployed.

Sam Jung

So we're happy to come back to you once we consult with our data team that has not been able to produce a number at this point in time.

Julie Won

After two years, you don't have any figure of how many people you've trained for net new green jobs?
